Dr. Monique Wheatley-Phillip’s passion for education is deeply rooted in her family and upbringing.
Education DNA
Her grandmother was the only teacher in a small village in the British Virgin Islands, where she taught in a one-room schoolhouse (Photo Above) and served as an important voice for children in her community. Education and advocacy were values that ran throughout her family, with several of her aunts also working as educators.
From an early age, Dr. Wheatley-Phillip learned the importance of advocating for those whose voices may not always be heard. That lesson has remained a guiding principle throughout her career.
Perseverance and Passion
Her father’s story also played a meaningful role in shaping her perspective. He had to leave school at the age of eight to help to his mom support their family. At that young age, he worked on several farms and honed his skills as a tradesman. His desire for a formal education led him to earn his GED later in life at the age of forty.
When Dr. Wheatley-Phillip received her Doctorate degree, seeing the pride and joy on her father’s face as she walked across the stage was a powerful reminder of the importance of education and perseverance.
These experiences continue to drive her commitment to ensuring that every student regardless of background, learning style, or circumstance has access to opportunity and support.

Outside of her professional responsibilities, Dr. Wheatley-Phillip values time for reflection and connection with family. As the oldest among her siblings and for her extended family, she often serves as a trusted voice when loved ones seek guidance or perspective.
She enjoys quiet activities such as weekend walks in parks or on the beach where she finds time to reflect and recharge after a busy work week. These moments of reflection help her maintain the balance and clarity needed to lead effectively.
Strengthening family relationships and maintaining strong personal connections remain important parts of her life.

For Dr. Wheatley-Phillip, education is more than a profession it is a lifelong commitment to helping young people discover their potential and prepare them to succeed in the world beyond the classroom.
Dr. Wheatley-Phillip believes every student deserves to be seen, heard, and understood, regardless of their background or circumstances.
She approaches leadership with a deep commitment to listening whether it is a student, a teacher, or a parent so they know their voices matter.
